Woodbridge Update - Creating a safer, more accessible and attractive town, while giving people more choice in how they travel.

Woodbridge Town Council is pleased to update the town on the improvements being led by Suffolk County Council to create a safer, more accessible and attractive town, while giving people more choice in how they travel. (The project was previously known under the banner of  Active Travel Woodbridge).

Following the installation of the crossing on Burkitt Road outside St Mary’s School, phase one delivery is expected to continue by early 2027 and will include:

•           the introduction of a town-wide 20mph speed limit, excluding the main/arterial roads through Woodbridge;

•           a number of new crossings, improving access and making it easier and safer to cross certain roads, particularly around local schools; and

•           traffic management improvements at Bullards Lane and Sandy Lane, helping to create safer and more attractive streets.

Together, these improvements will help make it easier and safer for people to get around Woodbridge, improve access to local schools and facilities, and enhance the town for residents, visitors and businesses.

Further details of phase two, focusing on the town centre, should follow in the next few weeks. The key objectives, to help create a more attractive and welcoming town centre, are:

1.          to widen pavements in Quay Street to make it safer for pedestrians; and

2.         to reduce traffic and improve the urban setting around Market Hill.

“It is an honour to be Mayor of the town just as this project, which has been a long time in coming, will finally see the light of day” says Councillor Nigel Phipps, Mayor of Woodbridge. “This is a £5 million investment from Active Travel England to provide a safer, more accessible and attractive town. It will be welcomed by many. It does, however, introduce changes that will disrupt some car journeys undertaken today. I hope those most seriously impacted will rapidly come to find ways to adjust their current journeys. Please do use the feedback opportunities that will be provided by Suffolk County Council so that adjustments can be made if deemed necessary.”
